Ok, well maybe I'm not technically in Africa...but it sure has felt like it these past few days! And yes, I know I'm from Arizona where the temperatures exceed 110 in the summer, but it feels way hotter than that in the Israel sun. I noticed that there was an unusual amount of what looked like smog in the air so I asked an Israeli if this is typical summer. He said that there are winds that come up from the Saharan desert that bring Saharan dirt (yes. dirt from Africa) and wind. I couldn't completely understand what he was saying in Hebrew, but I think the winds are called Simoom (I came home and looked it up on Wiki- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simoom).

rld. I know that sounds crazy- you are all thinking "duh Keara, you are in Israel which is super far away from the US!" I know that; however, when someone tells me that there is saharan dirt blowing into my bedroom- it reminds me how close I am to Africa!

earlier, the Simoon winds bring high temperatures and strong dirty winds which makes for a very hot 30 minute walk to and from school, the grocery store, or basically anywhere. My friend Lauren and I have taken to stopping halfway to get popsicles which definitely makes the walk cooler and easier. And boy do they have some interesting pospicle flavors in this country. No Jason- I haven't found hummus flavored popsicles yet :) But they do have push pops with gummy bears- yum!
Well I am off to celebrate the weekend with a delicious Israeli brunch. Happy 3rd of July America!
Does the Saharan dirt get stuck on your popsicles??? mmm...crunchy.
